The SEED Leadership Program at George Mason University is a comprehensive leadership education and development certificate program which unites classroom learning with co-curricular learning (learning that is complementary to coursework) since both types of learning are essential for leadership development. There are four Guiding Principles which are woven throughout the program: Service, Ethics, Engagement, and Diversity. The program is structured into four Learning States (mirroring Kolb’s Experiential Learning Cycle) which balance structure with flexibility since students are able to go through the stages in the order of their choosing. The SEED Leadership Program incorporates elements from a variety of leadership theories and models including the Social Change Model (SCM), Relational Leadership Model (RLM,) and Leadership Identity Development Model (LID).
SEED Program Developments
Through service I commit myself to the community. I listen, learn, and work to be as effective as possible.
Through ethics I think critically. I assess, negotiate, and open my mind to values and norms across cultures.
Through engagement I motivate. I work to empower, embrace, and reach out to as many members of the community as possible.
Through diversity, I am strong. I embrace all aspects of my identity, of the identities of others, and work to increase cultural competency within myself and my community.
